I am pleased to be the Union Hall district representative to the Franklin County Parks and Recreation Committee. I was appointed to the board in the summer of 2006. I look forward to more opportunities to enjoy Franklin County recreation with more park space throughout Franklin County to play team sports, canoe, fish, hike, and bike. The possibility for a whitewater course on the Pigg River is also exciting as well as completion of the Smith Mountain Lake park for Franklin County. I also look forward to seeing more space for our teams to practice and play in our county.

My family is active in sports and other activities in Franklin County. I am married to Susan. Susan is on the board of the YMCA. She is actively raising support for a YMCA tennis center in the county. We have four children: Missy, Carrie, Jessica, and Johnny. Missy is currently one of the Drum Majors for the Franklin County High School Marching Band. Carrie also plays in the Franklin County High School Marching Band. Jessica is also active in the band. All of our children have been involved with youth sports in the county. Softball, basketball, tennis, fishing, and soccer are some of the sports that interest our family. Johnny loves to play soccer. Our children attend Glade Hill Elementary, Benjamin Franklin Middle School, and the High School. Walter is the son of Walter and Yvonne Hughes, Sr. also of Union Hall. Walter Hughes, Sr. retired as the Fleetwood Plant Manager in Rocky Mount. Yvonne Hughes taught math at Ferrum College.

I was the Glade Hill PTO President for almost five years and continue to serve on their board. I am a member of the Rocky Mount Rotary Club. The Rotary Club helped to raise funds for the playgrounds in Rocky Mount at the YMCA and at the new Smith Mountain Lake county park playground. We also helped to fund the Skate Park in Rocky Mount. I am also a member of the Redwood United Methodist Church. I also lead mission teams in the USA and to Ghana in West Africa.

I look forward to being an active member of the Franklin County Parks and Recreation board and hearing how you want our county to grow to serve the recreational needs of our children and families.
