Gills Creek District

I grew up in Dickenson County Virginia and graduated from Clintwood High School.  I played football, baseball, and basketball while in high school and was fortunate to play on two state championship football teams.  I attended and graduated from East Tennessee State University in 1983 with a B.S. degree in Environmental Health, and a minor degree in Industrial Hygiene.  I am married to Veronica Baker, who teaches science at Franklin County High School.  Veronica and I moved from Williamsburg to Franklin County in 1984.  We have a 15 year old daughter, Chezdan, who is a ninth grade student at Franklin County High School.  She is active in various school sponsored sports and plays AAU softball during the summer.  I began employment with the Virginia Department of Health in 1983 as an Environmental Specialist.  For the past sixteen years I have served as the District Environmental Manager for Franklin, Patrick, and Henry Counties, along with the City of Martinsville.  I currently serve on several state and local policy and training committees.  I have previously coached girl’s softball for several years within the County Recreational League.  I was honored to be asked by Russ Johnson to serve on the County Recreation Commission representing the Gills Creek District.  I plan to assist the County in improving and expanding the recreational opportunities in a way that allows for all citizens to enjoy and have access to programs of interest.  A personal goal is to see the County host tournaments in various sports which will allow the development of the very best of facilities for our youth while also providing for economic opportunities.  Franklin County has many wonderful natural and man-made resources and I look forward in assisting to plan the use and develop of them to maximize our opportunities.
